Understanding Ingham County Releases
A release is the point when one agency ends its physical custody. It does not always mean that the person went home. Someone can leave the Ingham County Correctional Facility on bond, recognizance, a court order, or after serving a local sentence. The person may instead transfer to another county, the Michigan Department of Corrections, a federal authority, or immigration custody. The agency that ended custody makes the best record of that event. For a county jail exit, that is usually an Ingham County Sheriff release transaction, booking and release sheet, or custody log.
Legal status and physical location are separate questions. A court docket may state why release was authorized, yet jail staff may still need time to process the order. Michigan VINE may send an event notice after the jail transaction. OTIS can show parole from state prison, but it does not preserve each local jail stay. For that reason, confirm the exit with the last custodian and use the court record to explain its legal basis.

Ingham County Release Record Fields
The public Ingham County locator is not a release archive. A targeted record request is the more durable route. Give the full booked name, date of birth if known, inmate or booking number, and a narrow date range. Ask for existing records rather than requesting that the Sheriff create a new report. A booking number identifies the local custody event; it is not the same as an MDOC number or a court case number.
The record should connect a person, booking, exit time, legal authority, and destination. A coded field is useful only when its meaning is known, so request the code legend too. Transfer information can be limited by security or privacy rules. Medical and account details may also be withheld or redacted. The agency must separate nonexempt material when practical under Michigan law.

Request Ingham County Release Records
Ingham County Sheriff’s Office Central Records handles department records and FOIA releases. The office is at 630 North Cedar Street, Mason, MI 48854, and its telephone number is 517-676-8224. The official Sheriff FOIA request route links to county forms and submission options. No fixed price for a release record is published. Ask for an itemized estimate rather than assuming a cost.
- Identify the person by full booked name, birth date if known, and inmate or booking number.
- Give a bounded booking or release date range. Name the booking and release sheet, release transaction or log, release type, code legend, destination, linked case numbers, and booking photograph.
- Ask for electronic delivery. If the request is partly denied, request the nonexempt remainder and the legal basis for each redaction.
- Compare the produced release time with the court order and any VINE event. If a transfer is recorded, check the receiving agency.
Under MCL 15.235, a Michigan public body generally has five business days to grant, deny, partly grant, or take one written extension of up to ten more business days. That is a response clock, not a promise that a large production will arrive within five days. MCL 15.234 permits certain labor, copy, and mailing charges under stated conditions. Inspection may be an option where practical.
The Sheriff’s release transaction answers when county custody ended. A certified court order answers why. For a state-prison record, MDOC has a separate records route. Ingham Release Records After Set-Aside
Michigan’s Clean Slate process can make qualifying arrest, conviction, and sentence records nonpublic. Automatic processing began in 2023, and eligibility depends on the offense, time period, number of convictions, and other statutory rules. A set-aside does not change the historic fact that custody once took place. It can change which record is open to the public and why an old reference no longer matches a current search.
The Michigan Freedom of Information Act, MCL 15.231 through 15.246, governs Sheriff records. Privacy, active law-enforcement, safety, confidential-source, and other exemptions may apply. Court files follow Michigan Court Rule 8.119 rather than the county executive FOIA route. Juvenile material has stronger limits under MCL 712A.28. An authorized guardian or attorney should use the Family Division or Youth Center route for a juvenile case instead of the adult locator.
When Ingham Releases Are Scheduled
An Ingham County civil-service description gives a rare view of local release work. A Corrections Deputy serving as Release Coordinator prepares next-day lists for people scheduled for a 6:00 a.m. release, checks packets, and reviews release dates, court matters, restrictions, and pending warrants. That time applies to a planned cohort. It does not mean every bond, transfer, or new court order leads to a 6:00 a.m. exit.
Several clocks may exist for one event. A judge can sign an order before jail processing ends. Staff must confirm the legal basis, check for holds, return approved property, and complete the custody transaction. VINE can transmit later. When the exact time matters, ask the Sheriff whether physical release occurred and request the recorded timestamp.
Transportation After Ingham County Release
The local Release Coordinator may help a person plan transport to a residence and identify public-transit options. This does not promise a ride. CATA rural service generally links southern Ingham County riders at Mason Meijer, but the published material does not promise a stop at the jail. Plans should account for the actual release site and time. A transfer does not create a trip home from Mason because the receiving agency controls the next location. For a community release, confirm where the person will exit, whether personal property is ready, and which transit option still runs at that hour.

Ingham Bond Releases Stay Open
Bond or conditional pretrial release ends physical jail custody while the charge remains pending. Ingham Pretrial Services supervises certain high-court misdemeanor and felony defendants whom a court releases on bond. Staff can monitor court dates and conditions and coordinate ordered testing or electronic monitoring. A release entry therefore must not be read as a dismissal or completed sentence.
The court docket is the best source for conditions and the next hearing. The Sheriff record supplies the actual exit time. If the person is not found in the current locator, check the correct court and ask whether the release was by bond, recognizance, or another order. Ingham has several court paths, so use the case number rather than guessing from the arrest location.
Ingham Release Reentry Support
Ingham County’s Correctional Assessment and Treatment Services jail re-entry team connects people with continuing medical and behavioral services. The Sheriff’s community resource guide also states that Narcan kits are available at the jail exit or lobby. These services can help with continuity of care, but participation does not prove whether a person was released, transferred, or remains in custody.
Custody facts still come from the Sheriff’s records. Reentry coordination answers a different need: how support can continue after a community return. Property After Ingham County Release
Property can be released before or after the person’s own exit. The Sheriff visitor material says an inmate may complete a property-release form that names a person to retrieve items. The named person presents identification at the correctional-facility lobby. That process is distinct from the release record and from any court property held as evidence.
Ask the jail which lobby address applies because official materials use both 630 and 640 North Cedar Street for the Justice Complex campus. Request a property acknowledgment only when it helps document the custody event, and keep the request narrow. Account, medical, and private details may be exempt or redacted.
Ingham Courts Before Jail Release
Ingham County has four relevant trial-court paths: the 30th Circuit Court, Lansing’s 54-A District Court, East Lansing’s 54-B District Court, and the 55th District Court for the rest of the county. The local Release Coordinator checks active cases and pending warrants before a scheduled release. A favorable order in one file can therefore coexist with another case, warrant, or hold.
Search by case number when possible. A docket may show bond, a dismissal, plea, sentence, probation, commitment to MDOC, or an amended order. Online data is not the certified record, and an entered order can precede physical jail processing. Ingham Release Records Changed Address
Ingham County completed a 429-bed, roughly 169,000-square-foot Justice Complex in January 2023. Jail housing moved on February 16, and the old complex was later demolished. Older records, saved directions, and agency materials may therefore use different building or campus references. That does not mean the records describe different jail systems.
The public-facing complex is listed at 640 North Cedar Street in Mason, while Sheriff records and legal-mail material also use 630 North Cedar Street. The official Corrections page gives the inmate information line as 517-676-2431, option 3. Lobby hours are Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Note: Confirm the correct building entrance before an in-person visit because official Justice Complex materials use both campus street numbers.
Search Ingham County Released Inmates
Start with the last likely custodian. County jail, state prison, federal prison, immigration detention, and another county each keep separate records. A police incident number identifies an arresting agency. A booking number identifies a jail stay. A case number identifies the court file. Do not treat those numbers as interchangeable.
- Search the official Ingham County Inmate Locator once by name and inmate number. A hit indicates recorded current custody, not release.
- If no record appears, call 517-676-2431, option 3. Ask whether the person left, when the exit occurred, the release type, and whether another agency took custody.
- Check Michigan VINE for a custody event. An alert is a prompt to verify with the jail or MDOC, not a certified release record.
- Use OTIS only when MDOC prison, parole, probation, or recent discharge may apply. It does not cover every Ingham County jail booking.
- Open the correct court case to find bond, disposition, sentence, probation, commitment, or a later order.
- For federal custody, use BOP. For immigration detention, use ICE. Use the Sheriff FOIA route for durable proof of a county jail exit.
OTIS Search for Ingham Releases
The Michigan Department of Corrections calls its public database the Offender Tracking Information System, or OTIS. It covers prisoners, parolees, probationers supervised by MDOC, and qualifying recently discharged records. It does not cover a person whose only custody was an Ingham County jail or city lockup. OTIS normally displays a record for three years after the most recent discharge. MDOC’s separate past-prisoner contact reaches up to six years after release.
Search with an MDOC number when known. Otherwise, enter at least a last name. OTIS permits a trailing wildcard after three leading letters. Add first name, sex, race, or approximate age only to narrow results. Exact-match scars, marks, and tattoo fields can hide a valid result if entered wrong. Match by MDOC number and core identifiers rather than a photo alone.

The form applies only when the person entered MDOC jurisdiction. Read each date with its label, then confirm a time-sensitive status with MDOC or the assigned office.
Ingham Release Alerts and Federal Checks
Michigan VINE is a free custody and court event service. Ingham County’s visitor material documents local participation. Search the person, choose the correct agency record, and register for a phone, email, or text notice while the record is eligible. Telephone notices use a four-digit PIN. VINE can report release, transfer, escape, death, and certain court changes, but it is not a permanent archive or certified record.
Federal custody requires a federal tool. The BOP Inmate Locator can show “Released” and a release date for federal BOP records. “In Transit” is not release, and a BOP release does not rule out state, local, immigration, or community supervision. ICE’s locator is mainly a current detention tool and may include people released from ICE custody during a short prior window. A miss is inconclusive. ICE’s information line is 888-351-4024, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
USMS often uses contract facilities for federal pretrial detention and has no comparable public historical release list. Use the federal court docket, holding facility, and responsible district. BOP becomes relevant after designation to the federal prison system.

No single search covers each release path. Pick the system that held the person and the question that needs proof. A current roster answers who is held now. A release transaction answers when one jail ended custody. A court order explains authority. State and federal systems cover only their own jurisdiction.

Ingham County Release Facilities
The Ingham County Correctional Facility is the principal adult jail. The Youth Center handles secure juvenile detention under Family Division rules. Lansing Police and MSU Police and Public Safety have short-term arrest and processing functions, but neither is a long-term county corrections institution. The county has no MDOC prison or BOP institution. A person sentenced to state or federal custody may be housed well outside Ingham County.
